While schools implemented self-esteem curricula and parents devoured books on how to nurture it in their children , a critical fact was overlooked. In the popular but wildly mangled translation of a complex psychological concept, what we ended up focusing on was not self-esteem but narcissism. Feeling appropriately good about one’s accomplishments is self-esteem; feeling “special” just because, especially when coupled with a lack of empathy, is narcissism.
