I’m well aware that parents frequently assume we [early learning professionals] always know what we’re doing, when, in fact, we are sometimes just as unsure as they are. Kindergarten teachers often have elementary education degrees, which may not have included coursework in young children’s growth and development. There are still bachelor’s degree programs in elementary education that require coursework in human development but not in child development. We all bring good intentions to work with us, but if we have not been properly prepared to do the job, we are put in an unfair position and so are the recipients of our services.
