Vygotsky introduced us to the zone of proximal development, the difference between what a child understands and what they can understand through scaffolding from adults. An example of this is when completing a jigsaw. A child may be able to complete a jigsaw through their own existing knowledge but when an adult points out that all of the pieces with a straight edge create the outside of the jigsaw, the child will find it easier to complete.
