Heuristic play is an expression familiar to early years practitioners in the UK and elsewhere. Goldschmied and Jackson (2004) described the application of the idea of heuristic learning to our youngest children, and it was they who coined the term heuristic play, to describe the investigation of objects and their functions by babies and toddlers. The origins of heuristic play thus lie in the concept of heuristic education, where the learner is trained to find things out for themselves, which in other words is discovery learning (from the Greek ‘heuriskein’, which means to discover), another familiar term. As an approach to learning, it can be linked to ‘trial-and-error’ learning, or to using existing knowledge to develop a ‘rule-of-thumb’ to apply to problem solving.
