About Respite Child Care
Respite child care provides short-term child care services for families so primary caregivers can have a much-needed break. These short periods apart benefit both the child and the adult. For the child, it’s a chance to build new relationships with children and adults as well as an opportunity to explore a different environment and have new experiences. For the adult, respite child care is a chance for rest and relief from the stress of being a full-time caregiver.
Respite child care programs serve foster and adoptive families, families at risk of child abuse, neglect, or disruption, and families with children who are challenging to parent. These programs may also serve families managing substance abuse or mental health issues.
Parenting is a challenging endeavor. Respite child care programs exist to offer a helping hand. Not all families have access to a trusted, available outside caregiver who can provide kith-and-kin respite care. These programs exist to fill that void.
