To really explore nature, children need what Robin Moore calls “rough ground”—weedy lots, dirt roads, ponds, wooded fields, unpruned trees, tall grass. Such settings tend to be relatively diverse and unpredictable. We can’t be sure, for example, what species of insects, flowers, or birds might find a home in a weedy vacant lot. Thus, a child exploring such an area can make truly original discoveries.
