Quote

Parents are sometimes eager to talk to the child about what he sees, and to turn the moment into a lesson. A parent might say, “Do you remember the ants in the book at home? That’s a worker ant; its job is to find food for the colony.” We consider our verbal explanations to be educational, but they may distract the child from what he is attending to. If a little boy is silently absorbed in watching the ant, let him continue. Let him learn in his own way and make his own discoveries. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Be not too much his parent. Trespass not on his solitude.”
