Young children do not seem ready to venture off by themselves to wade in ponds, climb rocks, or to wander off paths to examine insects or other living things. But with a little effort, we can usually strike a balance between safety and the child’s need for adventure. It is usually enough to sit or stand a short distance from the child, keeping a watchful eye on her while she explores her surroundings in her own way. We do not need to do more than this—simply maintain an unobtrusive, watchful presence.
