Beginning in the 1980s, schools everywhere started purchasing as many computers as possible simply because of the computer’s anticipated prominence in tomorrow’s workplace. Even today, the research supporting the instructional value of computer technology doesn’t begin to justify the esteem in which the computer is held. I would emphasize that although computers may play a major role in the child’s future, the future isn’t the only important time dimension. The child’s present needs and development matter, too. We should consider the full range of experiences the child needs at his or her current stage, and ask, “How well does the computer fulfill and limit these needs?”
