Motherese seems to come to us quite naturally. It is prevalent in cultures around the world, although not in all. The Kaluli in New Guinea, for example, don’t believe in using it. Current evidence indicates that parents who use a particularly large amount of motherese can speed up language development a bit. But motherese is hardly essential for normal language development. On average, the Kaluli children, who don’t hear motherese, learn language at about the same rate as U. S. children.
