The first clear form to emerge from the two-year-old’s scribbles is the circle. Initially, children scribble in a back-and-forth motion. Then children begin drawing clearer circles. These are often spiral-like, concentric circles; the child begins drawing a circle and keeps widening it. The gestalt psychologist Rudolf Arnheim said that the emergence of the circle is a great event in life.
