To the research described earlier in this book we can now add a series of studies conducted by Eric Anderman and his colleagues. They’ve found that when teachers emphasize the importance of getting good grades or high test scores, students come to “value reading less ” and are also more likely to cheat. Furthermore, high school students who tend to think about current events in terms of what they’ll need to know for a grade are less knowledgeable than their peers, even after taking other variables into account —another indication that the quality of learning suffers when students are thinking about getting A’s.
