My flight home from delivering a training presentation was delayed–again. That’s where I witnessed an exciting game of terminal rubber band.
I entertained myself during the wait by wandering the terminal and people-watching.
The joyful squeal of a toddler grabbed me by the ear. Turning toward the happy squeak, I saw a two-year-old boy–right arm outstretched, a green rubber band clasped between his thumb and index finger–speeding to his grandpa.
“Again, Papa!” he shouted, handing off the rubber band.
Grandpa looped the band over his finger, pulled it back with his other hand, and launched it. The boy squealed gleefully and ran off to retrieve it.
“Again!”
Terminal Rubber Band Wrap Up
Grandpa was having nearly as much fun as the toddler and doing what he could to make the best of the flight delay. Aside from the intergenerational fun, the kid was brushing up against concepts like gravity, motion, cause-and-effect relationships, elasticity, visual tracking, spatial relations, and more. That’s a lot of STEM play for a rubberband to spark.
