This handout outlines Jean Piaget’s (1896-1980) 4 stages of cognitive development and offers valuable insight into children’s cognitive development. The 4 stages are Sensorimotor (birth to age 2), Preoperational (ages 2-7), Concrete Operational (ages 7-11), and Formal Operational (ages 11 and up).
There are criticisms of these stages. For example, some question whether development progresses linearly from stage to stage, and others feel he needed to factor in the influence of culture on cognitive development.
