We are putting increasingly high pressure on young people to achieve academic success. This pressure begins in schools when they are five, and continues as they are graded throughout their school careers. The introduction of compulsory tests at key stages throughout primary and secondary education, combined with public examinations for school leaving and university entrance, means that children learn to judge themselves by their grades. Adults today had a light assessment load at school compared with children at school now.
