When the child wakes up crying, parents give up their own need for sleep. When the child is ill, parents rearrange their own plans. When the baby needs changing, parents stop what they are doing. This however, should not mean that parents must sacrifice themselves completely and say “No!” to their own values, feelings and goals. If this were to happen they would not be able to assume the leadership role that is fundamental for children to feel safe.
