As they approach and pass through adolescence, children develop a good understanding of the concept of risk. Social policy researchers from Middlesex University carried out qualitative research on attitudes to risk using focus groups of children aged 11/12 and 16/17 years. They found that ‘both younger and older groups had relatively sophisticated rationalisations and systems in place’ for managing risk. Their research suggested that children were well-versed in how to manage such risks as road safety, sexual protection and drugs and alcohol. However, ‘they appeared to be less confident in managing and negotiating social relationships that involved general teenage pressures to engage in risk activity.’
