Magda Gerber

Magda Gerber

Magda Gerber, a name synonymous with respectful and empathetic parenting, profoundly impacted child-rearing practices through her innovative approach known as Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE). Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1910, Gerber’s dedication to understanding and respecting the unique needs and capabilities of infants and young children has left an enduring legacy in early childhood education and parenting. In this blog post, we will explore the life and work of Magda Gerber and delve into the principles of RIE parenting that continue to guide parents and caregivers today.

Early Life and Influences

Magda Gerber’s journey towards becoming a pioneer in the world of child development began in Hungary. A skilled communicator, she studied language at the Sorbonne in France and spoke 4 fluently: Hungarian, German, French, and English. Gerber’s life changed when her daughter was sick, and their regular pediatrician was unavailable. Emmi Pikler treated the ill child. Gerber was impressed by how Pikler interacted with the ill child.

Gerber earned a Master’s in early childhood education and began working with Pikler in 1945 at the National Methodological Institute for Infant Care and Education in Budapest.

Additionally, her experiences as a Jewish woman during World War II, including internment in Nazi-occupied Hungary, instilled in her a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to treating every child with respect, dignity, and understanding.

Developing the RIE Approach

Magda Gerber’s path to RIE parenting was shaped by her experiences in working with young children. In 1957, she immigrated to the United States, where she joined forces with pediatrician Tom Forrest to develop her childcare philosophy.Their collaboration resulted in the creation of the “Educaring” approach, which became known as RIE.

RIE Parenting Principles

Central to RIE parenting are several key principles:

  • Respect for the Child: Gerber believed in treating every child as an individual with their thoughts, feelings, and needs. She advocated for respecting infants’ autonomy and acknowledging their capacity for self-exploration and self-expression.
  • Uninterrupted Play—Gerber encouraged free and uninterrupted playtime for children. She believed this allowed them to learn independently and develop essential skills.
  • Observation—A cornerstone of RIE parenting is the act of observation. Gerber stressed the importance of caregivers closely watching children to understand their needs better and ensure their safety.
  • Trusting the Child’s Competence—Gerber believed children are competent, capable individuals. RIE parenting involves allowing children to take on age-appropriate responsibilities and make choices.
  • Slow Down and Be Present—Gerber urged parents to slow down, be present, and engage with their children in our fast-paced world. This mindfulness is essential for building strong parent-child relationships.

Collaboration With Emmi Pikler

Emmi Pikler’s profound influence on Magda Gerber cannot be overstated. Their collaboration was a defining force behind developing the Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) philosophy. Pikler’s pioneering work in infant care, particularly in residential nurseries in Hungary, played a pivotal role in shaping Gerber’s beliefs and practices. Pikler’s emphasis on respectful and empathetic infant care aligned perfectly with Gerber’s commitment to treating every child with dignity and understanding. Through this collaboration, the core principles of RIE, including respect for the child, trust in their competence, and the importance of close observation were formulated. The partnership between Pikler and Gerber laid the foundation for a parenting approach that continues to have a lasting impact on how children are raised with respect and empathy.
