Light

How can you set the stage for children to interact with light in your play environment? As we’ve noted before here at Playvolution HQ, Simon Nicholson wrote about concepts as loose parts in his Theory Of Loose Parts. It’s usually helpful to bring in physical objects to assist in playing with concepts. In this case, light tables, flashlights, candles, the sun, lighting fixtures, sparklers, and other sources are helpful. As are objects that block, reflect, and change light.

When playing with concepts as loose parts, the goal is to help children notice and engage with the concept playfully. It can be as simple as placing an infant in a sunbeam streaming though the window, so they notice the tiny dust particles dancing in the air. Or darkening a room and handing preschoolers a couple packages of glow sticks. Or adding some battery powered candles to the dramatic play space.

FYI, LED panels like the one in some images below are amazing. They are super bright, durable, and easy to store. Here’s the one we have (this is an affiliate link). Thanks to family child care provider Shirley Rempel for sharing the photos that inspired this post. Scroll past the photos to learn how you can submit loose parts photos–we’re always looking for shots of loose parts in action.
