The denial of recess to American children makes the United States something of a global outlier. Many other nations offer breaks to children throughout the day, to give children a chance to recharge and refocus with sharper attention. Japanese children are given 10- to 15-minute breaks every hour or so, and in other East Asian primary schools, children are typically given a 10-minute break every 40 minutes or so. In Finland, where regular recess is considered a right of every child in school, for decades children have been sent outside for an average of 15 minutes every single hour, even in the freezing cold, snow, and rain, to keep them energized and engaged.
