Play has evidently been a natural foundation of childhood since the dawn of civilization, in all lands and cultures. A Greek vase dating from around 440 b.c. shows an illustration of a boy playing with a yo-yo. Play is common in many hunter-gatherer societies, and Native American cultures featured constant rugged outdoor play in the wilderness, as children mimicked the adult skills of stalking, hunting, and fighting. In some parts of Australia, children play a game called “weet weet,” or throwing a play stick, that originates from long traditions of indigenous communities.
