It could be argued that taking away recess as a punishment is educational malpractice. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cautions against taking away recess, stating that “withholding physical activity deprives students of health benefits important to their well-being.” The American Academy of Pediatrics warns against the cancellation of recess as well, declaring, “Recess is a necessary break in the day for optimizing a child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. In essence, recess should be considered a child’s personal time, and it should not be withheld for academic or punitive reasons.”
