You may wonder what is behind the widespread obsession to over-academize early childhood education and thereby reduce children’s playtime in school and at home. One apparent reason is the increasingly common assumption that starting formal academic learning earlier will pay off later in higher achievement scores in school and better-paid jobs in adulthood. But while many policymakers and parents may assume this is true, there is little compelling evidence to support this theory.
