A study published in the journal Sleep reveals that delaying school start times by nearly an hour leads to significant improvements in sleep duration, daytime alertness, and attendance for teenagers, with the research conducted on over 28,000 students across 52 high schools in a large, diverse suburban district showing that an 8:50 a.m. start time compared to 7:50 a.m. allowed teens to get an extra 45 minutes of sleep per night on average, reducing sleepiness and tardiness while aligning better with their natural biological rhythms.
