Kinds will find ladles to be fascinating and entertaining loose parts. These long handled serving spoons have been around a long time and, although I can’t prove it, I’m sure kids have been playing with them for just as long. These common utensils can cover a lot of ground as a play implement. They may be used in dramatic play to serve imaginary stew to a hungry family, or they may be used to scoop and dump real solids and liquids in sensory play. Either way, they’ll be supporting the development of social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language skills.
Ladles come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. Try to add a variety of them to your collection. You’ll find them new for reasonable prices and can get great deals at thrift stores and yard sales. But if you run across any that look like the ones below, check their value before handing them over to the kids–these are all museum pieces.
