Kites

Kites are physical loose parts that allow kids to explore a harder-to-see loose part, the wind. Kites are a great reason to get outside and a fantastic opportunity to explore various STEM concepts like motion, force, resistance, gravity, aerodynamics, and cause-and-effect relationships.

The learning potential of kites increases when you provide kids with materials to engineer their kites on their own. In the late 70s, I was joined by a couple of neighborhood pals in designing, building, and attempting to fly kites. It kept us occupied for much of a summer. We met with little success but had a lot of fun. A supply of wooden dowels, tape, paper, glue, string, and scissors, coupled with some time and space, can lead to a lot of kites–some that may even leave the ground.
