There is usually only an arbitrary connection between what the child has done and the resultant punishment. It can be a stretch for the child to try to figure out how the deed and the punishment go together. A child fails a class and his dad takes away his skateboard as punishment. Another doesn’t put her toys away and finds the next day that her mom, to teach her daughter a lesson, gave the toys to a local charity. A ten-year-old shows up late for dinner and is told to go to his room and not expect any food until breakfast. Two children are fighting and their parent grounds them for a month. None of this makes any sense to a child (or to a thoughtful adult).
