Threats and punishment discourage a child from acknowledging her actions (“Wasn’t me, didn’t do it”). They deprive the child of the opportunity to understand the consequences of her actions, to fix what she did, or to empathize with the people she may have harmed. They increase tension in the home and help children to develop a right/wrong, good/bad distorted view of reality. Most important, they rob a child of her sense of dignity and self-worth.
