Bribes and rewards and their flip side, threats and punishment, stunt the ability to make a choice. “If you share your toys with your brother, you can pick out a treat at the grocery store” (bribe). “You will share your toys with your brother or you will spend the rest of the afternoon in your room” (threat). “You can pick out a toy in the store since you shared your toy with your brother” (reward). “I am locking up all of your toys since you obviously can’t share with your brother”(punishment). None of these provide an opportunity for a child to willingly choose to share. All four seem to demonstrate that we are operating with an attitude of fear rather than faith.
