This handout looks at Harriet Merrill Johnson’s 7 stages of block play. Johnson (1886-1934) was a researcher, author, and one of the founders of the Bureau Of Education Experiments (now known as Bank Street College Of Education). She also served as the first director of the Bureau’s preschool program. She and her staff observed these stages of block play, outlined in her book The Art Of Block Building, in that preschool.
