Kindergarten days are now filled with first-grade expectations: reading, writing, and arithmetic. It’s typically a seven-hour school day spent sitting still, followed in many cases by homework worksheets. Although most adults know five-year-olds need time to play, relax, and release boisterous energy, there’s not room in a typical kindergarten day. Nap time is often gone, along with half days in most areas. It’s rare to find a sand table or dress-ups. Instead the rooms are filled with calendars, chairs, and calculations.
