We limit four key areas for our kids: physical risk, creative risk, social risk, and emotional risk. Observe what you tend to limit in your child’s life. For some of us it’s primarily physical, such as running on concrete or playing with sticks. For too many of us (despite our best intentions) it’s creative risk, which comes alive in free play during unstructured time. Social and emotional risk are not always recognized as the risks they are, but these risks include making mistakes, experiencing rejection, interacting in public, solving conflicts, and feeling scared, sad, and angry.
