Every hour a child spends drilling academics, looking at flash cards or other “we’ll make you smarter” stuff is lost time. And potentially damaging. Young kids become frustrated and stressed when they’re required to sit still and handle academic tasks their brains aren’t ready for. Too much stress can damage the prefrontal cortex, neuroscientists warn, an area critically important for memory and learning. Unless your child is reading joyfully on her own initiative or simply loves numbers, don’t dwell on reading, writing or math yet. Young kids need to learn in the early years, but the way young brains learn is largely through free play.
