Flash cards, testing and forced early academics for kids under age seven steal time away from play. We can make children memorize numbers and letters and study the calendar. If we’re persistent, most four-year-olds can be trained to recognize letters well enough to read simple words. But at what cost? Early academics steal playtime, which is when nearly all of a child’s emotional, social, physical and cognitive learning takes place. The child’s brain is being asked to do something it doesn’t need to do right now.
