Since many preschools today focus on academics, they ask kids to have social and emotional skills all figured out before they arrive. One school gave parents a handout called “Items Needed for Preschool.” Along with a backpack and a jacket labeled with the child’s name, it required all children to be able to get along socially with no bullying, hitting or pushing. This is absurd. Three- and four-year-olds shouldn’t be expected to have mastered these skills already. This is the work of the preschool years.
