Kids learn how to navigate friendships and potential playmates through modeling, just like anything else. Give them specific words to say that can help in friendship conflicts. A child who doesn’t understand what friendship is might say, “You’re not my friend anymore,” when he really means “I’m busy. I’m playing with Sam right now. Maybe we can play later.” Say those words yourself, and your child will soon be able to use them, too.
