Even preschools that purport to believe in free play actually give it little respect. Take a look at the daily schedules. If you see “free choice” time wedged in between multiple structured activities, group time and academic drilling, you’ll know it’s not truly the focus. Visit the classroom. Often “free play” is merely downtime while the teacher sets up the next structured activity.
