Quote

If judgements are made about children and their families, based on the yardstick of practitioners’ own lives, then any child who falls outside of those narrow parameters may sense feelings of alienation or disapproval from the very practitioner with whom they are meant to forge a close relationship. If expectations are set that do not take account of family circumstances or a child’s life story then practitioners will not have at their fingertips those intimate details about the child which can bolster relationships and lead to easy and natural interactions.
