The more a practitioner knows a baby, the more they are able to understand what the baby is trying to communicate. The attentive practitioner becomes skilled at differentiating the type of cry or the gestures that the baby uses to convey a particular need. Manning-Morton (1994) reminds us that although a baby’s crying makes us tense, this discomfort makes us act, which is just what the baby needs.
