From around the age of 10 months infants become generally more aware of other people’s responses, particularly those of their primary carer. They begin to use the reactions of others to guide their own behaviour, looking towards their parent or carer for a response to help them deal with a new experience. They need the adult to assess the situation and give them a positive or negative reaction, so that they know how to proceed (O’Connor 2008). It might be that the young child looks for guidance before acting – is it safe to walk through this gate; touch this fire; pick up this paper? Or it might also be that they are looking to see their adult’s emotional reaction – does mum like this person; is it safe to be with this dog?
