As babies reach their first year, many will become increasingly mobile. The mobile baby can crawl, pull to standing, and some may be taking their first steps. This combines with the emergence of simple depth perception in most children by age 12 months (Robinson 2008). This increasing capacity to explore the world, and improved visual coordination, leads to an increase in curiosity as more of the world is within the baby’s reach. With more to reach and see and grasp there are greater opportunities for adults to comment on, to name and to describe what the child sees and feels and hears.
