During this period of two to four months, babies become increasingly sensitive to the nature of face-to-face interactions. Experimental studies show that babies are affected by abnormal or unexpected behaviour on the part of their social partner. The seminal ‘still face experiment’ (Tronick et al. 1978) demonstrates that there is an ‘expectation’ in even very young infants that there will be some kind of similarity between the way that they are behaving and their carers’ response.
