Some parents are unable to respond in positive ways to the needs, let alone the distress, of their babies. A baby’s cries for attention can trigger negative responses in a parent, or a practitioner, who has overwhelming emotional needs of their own. Sometimes this causes the carer to become angry and withdraw from the child rather than leading them to respond and to care. For some it may be experiences in their own childhood which make it difficult for them to relate to the baby (Hobson 2002), for others it may be that the baby’s temperament poses a challenge that they find hard to meet (Sutter et al. 2003)…
