…most people mistakenly believe that crime against children is common, when in fact the reverse is true: nationally, crime rates have been falling steadily for decades; violent crimes have fallen by more than half since the early 1990s (Wolfers 2014). Additionally, crime against children committed by strangers is astonishingly rare (Skenazy 2015). By attending to the very worst incidents, the media make people think violent crimes are common and teach families to be fearful for their children’s safety.
