…the main reason children have so much less unsupervised play than they used to is fear—we worry about “what could happen” if children are unsupervised. In the name of safety and protection, playgrounds remove teeter-totters and swing sets; schools ban running at recess; children are not allowed to play unsupervised. And as much as we fear for children’s safety, we also fear litigation we might be faced with “if something happens,” so we remove possible risks, “to be on the safe side.”
