Concepts can be loose parts–variables in an environment with which people can interact. Hot is an example. Cold is another. Adults can tweak early learning environments to help kids bump into such concepts–to recognize and learn about them–as they play and explore. This article offers a simple example of how to do that with play dough of different temperatures.

There are many ways you can help kids bump up against the concept of hot in your early learning setting. Cooking, playing with thermometers, drinking warm cocoa on a cold day, getting close to a fire, or warming things in the sun, for example.
