This loose parts idea comes from Family Child Care Provider, Shirley Rempel of Alberta, Canada. She writes,”I introduced rubber hockey pucks to my program about 6 months ago, and they have been used daily as a variety of things. For ramps, as islands for animals and people, as towers and even food! One of the best loose parts I have added in 12 years as a provider!”
I love this idea, and am ever so jealous I didn’t think of it.
I don’t have a lot of personal experience with hockey pucks, but I do know them to be durable. My guess is that if they can withstand the game of hockey, they can withstand children’s play. I also know them to be round. Which means–stick with me here–they will roll. That opens up all kinds of fun STEM play possibilities.
They are also relatively inexpensive. As I write this, Amazon is selling sets of 18 for a little over $20 (that’s an affiliate link). That’s money well spent, considering how durable they are and how many ways kids can use them.
