All of us live, all the time, within structures. These exist in their turn within other structures within still larger structures, like Chinese boxes. This is just as true of children. They live in the structure of a family; beyond that in a neighborhood, about which they feel in a certain way. This child also lives in the structure of his friends, of his school. His life is much influenced by the geography and climate of the land around him. If he grows up on the coast of southern California, his life will be very different than if he lived on a ranch in northern Wyoming. Children are not indifferent to these structures. They sense them, intuit them, want to know about them, how to fit into them, how to make use of them.
