Even casual observation shows that human children, like other young mammals, deliberately put themselves into fear-inducing, vulnerable positions in their play….In their playful fighting, young children, like other young mammals, alternate between getting into and out of vulnerable positions. The stronger partner self-handicaps, to allow the weaker partner to break free from being pinned and to allow that partner to get into the attack position, so both can experience the thrill of being in the vulnerable position and escaping from it. In all of this, young humans are much like the young of other mammals, and they are apparently learning the same crucial lessons.
