Research shows that caring touch can have an extraordinarily positive effect on health, mental state, even longevity. Touch is as vital as any nutrient. Infants raised in foundling homes in the early 1900s were fed and kept clean, but employees had no extra time to cuddle them. These babies developed what was called marasmus, meaning they literally wasted away. The majority died. Those who survived were often severely impaired. Your hand on a child’s shoulder and your hug before bed conveys much more than words can say.
